COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lynchburg Parks and Recreation will host RecFest, a free self-care festival offering a kids zone, crafts, wellness vendors, food trucks + a scavenger hunt race at the City Armory on Saturday, October 25 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Local vendors must apply by October 19 + complete all vendor payments by October 21.  City of Lynchburg
  • A selection of photos shows Jefferson Park in Lynchburg now has a new basketball court and playground equipment. A ribbon—cutting ceremony celebrated the upgrades on Wednesday.  The News & Advance
  • Yesterday, community members, veterans, and city leaders met at Monument Terrace to honor Lynchburg native Desmond Doss, a WWII medic who saved 75 soldiers at Okinawa and became the first conscientious objector to earn the Medal of Honor (his legacy lives on in restored landmarks and local institutions).  WSET
  • A new electric GEM shuttle began service on October 10 to help visitors reach Natural Bridge easier—officials say the clean transport option will offer scheduled trips to improve access for locals and tourists. The service is part of a broader plan to upgrade local travel options.  WDBJ7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lynchburg’s Venue Cinemas—located at the Plaza off Lakeside Drive—announced its final day of operation is Sunday, October 26; the theater will run on its usual schedule until the lease expires.  WSET
  • The 1200 block of Main Street reopened after a 10-month closure for work that replaced water lines and improved storm and waste systems as part of the Downtown Renewal Project. Local business owners said the long closure hurt their earnings while crews work to complete the project by 2026—Main Street remains one-way.  WSET

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lynchburg Water Resources invites K-12 students to join the Second Annual 'Imagine A Day Without Water' Art Contest that asks them to think about how water supports local businesses—entries can be submitted individually or through a teacher. The contest is open to students in Lynchburg, Amherst County, Campbell County and private or homeschool; it accepts 2-D artwork or photography with submissions due November 6—winners will receive gift cards and have their work showcased at LWR and online.  WFXR TV
  • Central Virginia Community College has launched a new early college homeschool cohort that lets local homeschooled juniors and seniors attend classes at its Lynchburg campus for two years, earning college credits and an Associate of Science in General Studies. Applications open (December 15th-January 15th) and the program will begin (Fall 2026).  WDBJ7

  • City officials will close a section of Pearl Street from October 13 to October 14 for sewer line replacement work. Residents are urged to use alternate routes—expect delays during the repair period.  City of Lynchburg
