COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Casa of Central Virginia is set to host a superhero-themed run—bringing local participants together for an active event that supports community engagement.  WDBJ7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new restoration firm has opened in Lynchburg that offers 24/7 emergency repairs for fire, water, mold and storm damage. Part of a nationwide company, its Lynchburg office (3135 Carroll Avenue) serves a wide area (from Amherst County to Danville) and plans to grow its team to help more customers.  WSET

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Liberty University raised a record $7.4 million on its annual Giving Day on Oct. 22—breaking previous fundraising totals—as the school announced the milestone on Friday.  The News & Advance
  • Several Virginia colleges are reporting steady or growing enrollment this fall as they rebuild from the pandemic and adopt new admissions methods—Randolph College set a new record with its unique course schedule and Hollins University launched direct admission for future freshmen. Other schools, including Radford University and Virginia Tech, are offering new programs and incentives to attract students while some face challenges from declining international enrollments and financial strains.  Cardinal News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Due to the government shutdown, the Marine Corps Reserve is limited in running the Toys for Tots program and volunteers in the Roanoke Valley are stepping in to collect and distribute toys for children in need—planned events will be held on November 14 at Market Square and December 6-7 at the Berglund Center with collections ending on December 15.  WDBJ7
  • The City of Lynchburg will host an informational meeting on November 6 at Virginia Cooperative Extension at 2704 Concord Turnpike — citizens can drop in between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to learn about proposed improvements along Concord Turnpike, view conceptual designs at 2810 Concord Turnpike, and offer feedback to city staff and Hill Studio consultants.  City of Lynchburg

  • Carilion Clinic will provide a live fundraising update on its $100 million cancer center campaign and announce new facility plans— the event will detail progress and next steps for the project.  WSLS 10
