COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local relief groups launched donation drives on October 31st to help Hurricane Melissa survivors receive emergency supplies, and the efforts aim to support those impacted by the storm.  WDBJ7
  • United Way of Virginia’s Blue Ridge launched its Emergency Relief Fund to help families choose between food, rent, and essential bills amid the government shutdown. The group aims to raise $40,000 by December 2 and will start distributing funds through local partner agencies — keeping support right here for neighbors in need.  WDBJ7
  • Lynchburg Community Market is offering an extra $20 bonus on fruits and vegetables for SNAP recipients during its Harvest Special this November to fill the gap caused by the government shutdown (the extra funds will also support local farmers).  WSET
  • 3 Balloons opened a new store in Lynchburg that employs adults with intellectual disabilities—company officials said the shop is meant to offer meaningful work and boost local inclusion. The store, which began operations on October 31, is the latest step in expanding job opportunities for community members.  WDBJ7
  • Central Virginia Crimestoppers held picture day at the Campbell County Sheriff's Office for its annual Paws on Patrol K9 Crimefighters Calendar where four K9 teams competed for the cover spot and voters will cast ballots on social media in mid-November—raising funds for Crimestoppers and strengthening ties with law enforcement.  WSET

  • The local Office on Aging has reported service disruptions due to the ongoing government shutdown—services for seniors are now limited until funding resumes.  WDBJ7
  • The National D-Day Memorial in Bedford will host its Veterans Day ceremony on November 11—admission will be free until noon for the public and all day for veterans who will be honored during the service.  The News & Advance
  • On Monday, Virginia becomes the first state to fund emergency food assistance as the federal SNAP program pauses due to a government shutdown — the Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance program will distribute benefits weekly starting November 3 for SNAP recipients enrolled in October. Local food banks and pantries in Lynchburg such as the Lighthouse Community Center and Lynchburg Daily Bread accept donations and provide meals during the benefit gap.  Cardinal News
