COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Here @ Home clarified confusion about SNAP benefits by providing clear information and listing essential resources for residents to access nutrition assistance—helping families navigate available support amid mixed messages.   • WSLS volunteers and Northside High International Habitat Club students worked today on the 11th Home for Good as they continue building the home that began with a wall-raising this summer—finishing by late fall so the Toure family can celebrate the holidays in their new home.   WSLS 10
  • On November 6, Tanner interviewed Robin Reed about the flood of '85 and its effects on Lynchburg—Reed explained how the event changed local lives and what residents learned from it.  WDBJ7
  • Gleaning for the World is asking shoppers to donate needed items for veterans, including coffee, clothes and puzzles, outside Sam's Club on Wards Road as part of a donation drive that ran November 6 and continues today (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.); a separate list calls for items to help Hurricane Melissa survivors.  WSET
  • Two World War II veterans now live as neighbors at Terra Bella Senior Living in Salem—99-year-old George Hubbard once piloted a Higgins boat on D-Day while 102-year-old James Flinchum, who helped rescue downed pilots, now shares daily talks about their service. Activities Director Julie Phillips says their friendship brings living history to the community.  WSET

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central Virginia Community College launched its Welding Technology program at its Appomattox location after renovating the center to meet local workforce needs—high school seniors began training on August 25 while adult classes will start in Fall 2026. The program offers hands-on career training that leads to nationally recognized credentials under a partnership with local agencies.  WFXR TV
  • E.C. Glass High School's marching band won its first-ever state championship on Oct. 25 at one of Virginia's most competitive contests — a win that marked years of hard work and dedication by its seniors — and they celebrated this historic milestone in the program.  The News & Advance

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Beginning November 10 and continuing through December 1 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., a lane near 1901 Tate Springs Road will be closed for a new Centra entrance—motorists may face minor delays. Flagging operations are in place and work will operate weather permitting—emergency vehicles will always have access.  City of Lynchburg
  • Lynchburg Regional Airport officials said they have not noticed any impacts from the FAA flight cut proposals while American Airlines reported that most passengers should see no delays, and passengers are urged to check with their airlines if there are any changes. The airport remains in close contact with carriers as updates are expected soon.  WFXR TV
