COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Businesses nationwide and in Lynchburg will offer free meals, discounts, and freebies on Veterans Day — November 11 — to honor veterans and active duty military, with local deals from Trade Winds Subs and Deli and Outside the Cone adding to the list.  WSET
  • Peace of Pie Pizzeria in Altavista began offering free family meals on Wednesday—an hour after opening, they ran out of food—to help local families facing SNAP gaps. The pizzeria will continue preparing meals with community donations until SNAP benefits are fully restored.  WSET
  • Last Friday, November 7, the Salvation Army kicked off its Angel Tree Program to give holiday gifts to children in Lynchburg, Bedford, Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell and Nelson counties—this program began in Lynchburg in 1979.  WSET
  • The Monelison Volunteer Fire Department announced the passing of former firefighter Dennis Prince, who served for 25 years and was known for his humor and dedication. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 9 at Tharp Funeral Home in Madison Heights from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.  WSET

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jones Memorial Library’s rare book was named a finalist in the Virginia Association of Museums’ 2026 Top 10 Endangered Artifacts Program — one of 10 items chosen to highlight the need to preserve at-risk cultural treasures.  The News & Advance

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lynchburg Public Library will begin renovations on its Main Library and move Youth Services to the Miller Center at 301 Grove Street on December 8. The library will close on November 10 and 11, offer in-person browsing on November 12, and transfer all services to the Miller Center and Downtown Branch by December 29 — with programs resuming with Parks and Recreation in early winter.  City of Lynchburg
  • Lynchburg Regional Airport said its flights remain on schedule despite the government shutdown, while nearby Roanoke-Blacksburg canceled flights to Atlanta, Charlotte and Washington on November 6 and will cancel additional Delta flights on November 12 and 13. Travelers should check with their airlines frequently for any further changes—backup travel plans are recommended.  WSET
  • Gov. Youngkin submitted his $1B funding application on Nov. 7 to overhaul rural healthcare infrastructure — a move aimed at modernizing facilities and improving care in remote communities.  WDBJ7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Patrick Urgent Care closed permanently on November 7 — local patients now must seek other health care options as officials have not announced a plan to reopen the facility.  WDBJ7

  • Week 11 of football featured several matchups as Heritage faced Jefferson Forest, Brookville played E.C. Glass, George Wythe met Giles, Northside challenged Lord Botetourt, Franklin Co. squared off with William Fleming, Atlantic Shores Christian clashed with North Cross, and Magna Vista faced GW Danville as the standout game — while Glenvar played Floyd Co., Salem met Christiansburg, Patrick Henry battled Blacksburg, and Hidden Valley faced Pulaski.  WDBJ7
