COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Veterans got free meals and special deals today at 30 Lynchburg restaurants and coffee shops to thank them for their service. Mission BBQ on Wards Road served free sandwiches to veterans with a military ID until 9 p.m. today (other venues also hosted veteran gatherings).  WSET
  • The Wags to Riches Raffle raised funds to support animal rescue groups—helping local pet programs benefit from the event's proceeds.  WDBJ7
  • Hundreds gathered at the D'Day Memorial on November 11 to honor fallen heroes—local residents observed a solemn ceremony and laid wreaths to pay tribute to those who served. The event marked a local effort to remember military sacrifice.  WDBJ7
  • Last year, a fire burned the National Center for Healthy Veterans' main barn one day before Veteran's Day, and the center rebuilt its improved facility at Valor Farm for its sixth annual celebration. Retired Major General Bob Dees and Liberty University president Dondi Costin spoke at the event—emphasizing the center’s renewed strength and commitment to helping veterans regain full health.  WSET
  • The WSET Weather Team went to Ollie's to purchase new and unwrapped toys such as Hot Wheels, Barbie dolls and action figures to support the Toys for Tots drive in Lynchburg — the shopping trip highlights a local effort to collect gifts for children in need.  WSET

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lynchburg City Schools will hold an Educational Career Fair on Saturday, November 15 to fill 12 openings within the division.  The News & Advance
  • Central Virginia Community College was named one of the top 200 community colleges in the country by the Aspen Institute—this honor recognizes the school’s strong programs in our community.  The News & Advance

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dozens gathered at Monument Terrace in Lynchburg on November 11 to honor veterans as a rifle salute, posting of the colors and Taps marked the ceremony. Retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Jason Bohm and Congressman John McGuire spoke in praise of their service—highlighting their lasting commitment to the community.  WSET

  • Virginia Off-Road’s Trail to Recovery is a new initiative that offers veterans off-roading trips along the Blue Ridge Mountains to boost mental and emotional wellness—participants will also join trail stewardship efforts to help maintain local natural areas.  WFXR TV
