- ➤ Dozens attended the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance veterans breakfast yesterday to support veterans transitioning from military service to civilian work. Panelists including Pat Simon and Dale Reed discussed workforce challenges and honored veteran Mark Crouch while CloudFit Software was recognized by Microsoft as the Partner of the Year Award winner in Global Defense and Intelligence. - ➤ Amazement Square expanded its space by unveiling an outdoor chalk board sculpture on Nov. 12 that lets families write messages, jokes, and poems—visitors received Popsicle-shaped chalk to spark creativity. WSET
- ➤ On Tuesday, a crowd gathered at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford to honor veterans for Veterans Day—local families and residents paid tribute to those who served—and the ceremony was held on a frigid, windy morning. The News & Advance

- ➤ Monument Terrace was dedicated in 1925 to honor those who fought and died in wars and features 132 steps, 10 landings and 11 markers while serving as a rallying point for the community. The News & Advance

- ➤ The University of Lynchburg announced a buyout program for tenured and tenure-track faculty on Nov. 6 to cut its deficit and support its strategic plan without eliminating academic programs. The measure—one of several cost-saving steps taken after previous program and position cuts—comes as the university awaits an accreditor decision next month regarding its warning status. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Department of Wildlife Resources announced it will require mandatory chronic wasting disease testing for deer after concerns over disease spread—officials say the rule will take effect soon and all hunters must bring their deer to approved testing sites. Hunters will need to follow the new testing requirement when processing their deer. WDBJ7
- ➤ Lynchburg Water Resources — LWR — and Bedford Regional Water Authority — BRWA — have teamed up for the 'Enjoy the Feast, Recycle the Grease' campaign to offer free grease disposal kits at select Lynchburg and Bedford locations through December 31. The kits help residents keep cooking oils and grease from clogging sewer pipes by recycling them into biofuel. City of Lynchburg

- ➤ On Wednesday, Lynchburg City Council approved a conditional permit for Sobrius Holistic Recovery to convert the former Miller Home for Girls on Westerly Drive into a treatment center for up to 36 patients. The new facility will open by March 2026—bringing 15 jobs to the area. WSET
- ➤ Amherst County Fire and EMS said they received multiple calls about a smoky haze near Route 130 on Wednesday and, after consulting with U.S. Forest Service officials, determined the smoke came from a large wildfire in Botetourt and Craig Counties—officials advised residents to avoid burning until weather conditions improve.
