COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Residents near Lakeland Lake in Lynchburg are worried after pipe repairs revealed deep layers of silt that many say come from runoff from nearby developments. Neighbors estimate cleaning up the lake could cost about $1 million and urge city officials & developers to take action. WSET
- ➤ The Lynchburg Humane Society will host its annual Fall Fest and pet adoption event on Saturday, November 15, with festivities from 2 to 5 p.m. A Food Drive Adoption Special will lower the standard $50 adoption fee by $10 for each canned good donated — up to a maximum discount of $30. WSET
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Lynchburg Museum opened its newest exhibit honoring natives who fought in the Vietnam War — the exhibit displays 27 names, photos, medals, and dog tags with donated artifacts, and it will remain through May with a second part featuring new items. WSET
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Central Virginia Community College will install three outdoor sirens and high-power speakers on campus to warn students and visitors during emergencies. The system will be in place by the end of fall semester—ensuring timely alerts. WDBJ7
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Hill City and Bedford County are offering free at-home grease disposal kits through Dec. 31 to help keep fats out of local sewers—residents can pick up the kits at designated Lynchburg and Bedford County centers—and the collected grease will be recycled into eco-friendly biofuel. WSLS
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Beginning Monday, November 17 until Thursday, January 8, lane closures will occur daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at select locations to allow Shentel crews to install line work using aerial, trench and directional drilling methods—drivers should expect minor delays and follow all temporary signage while emergency vehicles keep access. - ➤ On Tuesday evening, the National Center for Healthy Veterans held a Veterans Day ceremony where Liberty University President Dondi Costin spoke to honor veterans. The event recognized the service of local veterans and brought community members together. The News & Advance
