COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Operation Christmas Child is underway today as part of National Collection Week that runs from November 17th through the 24th, inviting residents in Lynchburg, Bedford and Campbell counties to drop off gift-filled shoeboxes for children in need. Calvary Baptist Church on Timberlake Road has already received thousands of boxes — each box is prayed over by volunteers before being sent overseas.  WSET
  • On November 23, the Bright Nights Block Party will take place in Downtown Lynchburg from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Temporary closures will affect Commerce Street between 10th and Main + parts of 11th, 12th and 13th Streets and two parking lots from noon to 9:00 p.m., with towing enforced in restricted areas so motorists must use alternate routes.  City of Lynchburg
  • Rustburg High School mourned the loss of freshman William Hawkins, who died by suicide almost two weeks ago. On Sunday students—teachers and family—gathered for a vigil to honor his life while urging open talks about mental health and bullying.  WSET

CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday, the Henry County Sheriff's Office rescued 106 dogs from unsanitary living conditions at a Martinsville home on the 100 block of Winnie Lane after a welfare check revealed hazardous conditions+ local animal agencies assisted in an operation that lasted until 4:30 a.m. Saturday while the owner surrendered the dogs.  WSLS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College seniors expressed concern about the job market after graduation—many worry that limited hiring opportunities may delay their career starts.  WDBJ7
  • Lynchburg City Schools are re-evaluating bus routes to tackle overcrowding and keep students safe. The district will add high-capacity buses—using alternative transportation when needed—and update parents via the My Ride App and School Messenger if bus assignments and pick-up times change.  WSET

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lynchburg City Council is asking residents to volunteer for several boards and commissions to help shape the city's future. The Council will consider appointments at a closed session on December 9—applications must be submitted by November 24.  City of Lynchburg

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local teen Cody Beck, who battled a congenital heart defect and recently underwent heart transplant surgery, is trading hospital noise for the outdoors at home in Forest — a change that shows his progress — while ABC13 will update his story on Thursday, November 20 at 6 p.m.  WSET
