COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Daily Bread soup kitchen in Lynchburg is preparing to serve over 1,000 meals for Thanksgiving—no proof of need is required—and help families who struggle with dinner expenses. Director Laurel Hovey said the kitchen has stockpiled ingredients for a full spread including turkey, dressing, and cranberry sauce and will offer the meals for pickup so everyone can share a holiday dinner at home.  WSET
  • Operation Christmas Joy is a holiday program that supports local families by providing gifts and supplies to those in need. The initiative is expected to ease financial pressure on households and continue throughout the season.  WDBJ7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Komma Tea opened at River Ridge last week and now serves teas, coffees, boba drinks and its signature Kommacaron in Lynchburg. The shop is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. + on Sundays from 12 to 6 p.m.  WSET

CULTURE NEWS

  • Illuminights returns to Explore Park on November 22nd+ the event is expected to offer a unique light display for local residents.  WDBJ7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Before winter begins, the ABC 13 team and the National Weather Service visited the studio to test a snowboard tool that gives a flat, hard surface—so grass does not affect snow measurements. The team will continue using the same spots to track snowfall as temperatures drop.  WSET
  • Lynchburg Water Resources and Bedford Regional Water Authority are urging residents to recycle leftover cooking grease using free disposal kits until December 31—improper disposal can lead to clogged pipes and costly repairs.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Public Works said milling and paving operations are underway on Florida Avenue — from Bright Star Court to Winston Ridge Road — from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until Friday November 21, and drivers should expect minor delays as flaggers restrict traffic to one lane while emergency vehicles maintain access.  WSET

HEALTH NEWS

  • RSV is a very contagious virus that can cause severe lung infections in babies. Dr. Barrett at Cleveland Clinic Children's advises parents to wash hands, keep sick people away, and use the immunization shot—cutting the risk of severe infection by around 70%—to protect infants this winter.  WSLS 10
  • Dr. Ryan Fulton from Carilion Children’s in Daleville said flu cases are rising in local schools and offices and warned that children may develop high fevers, pneumonia, or dehydration. He urged parents to vaccinate children over six months and advised that all household members get vaccinated if a child is too young—flu is already impacting our community.  WSLS 10

  • Amherst County High School freshman Ben Hunt won a national equestrian competition in Belton, Texas—riding his Gypsy Vanner mare Fiona—and said he enjoys being one with the horse.  The News & Advance
