COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Salvation Army at 2215 Park Avenue will open a warming center each night from December 1 to March 31 when temperatures fall below freezing. The center will serve unsheltered individuals and families with a hot meal from 5:00 p.m. with intake at 6:00 p.m.—it will close at 8:00 a.m. and is partly funded by the City’s Community Development Block Grant. - ➤ Fire crews fought a field fire that spread into a wooded area and the teams secured the scene as they brought the blaze under control. WSET
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Polyzent Trading, a Virginia plastic stretch film manufacturer, will invest $1.1 million to build its first manufacturing site in Lynchburg, creating 20 jobs. Operations will begin in December with a fully automated extrusion line that produces 40 to 50 tons of film per month — boosting local supply chains. WSLS
- ➤ A new home decor and gift shop named Dimora opened downtown Lynchburg at 207 9th St., near the Main St. intersection, offering handmade candles, pottery, pillows and linens along with interior design and architectural services. Owner Jess Felicione said the shop, launched with help from the Downtown Lynchburg Association Launch Lynchburg program, operates Tuesday-Friday 11 a.m.-7:30 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. and Sunday noon-4 p.m. WSET
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A report from Roanoke College shows that holiday spending in Virginia will drop 5% as families cut back due to high prices and a softer job market – they plan to spend just over $1,000 on gifts and buy more than half online, pushing local businesses to adjust their strategies. WSET
- ➤ Virginia saw record travel as 2.08 million people took to roads and skies ahead of Thanksgiving with Tuesday’s numbers rising from previous years. AAA said travelers today and into early Thursday morning must plan ahead—using rideshares, taxis, or a designated driver to remain safe. WSET
- ➤ Polyzent, a plastics start-up, will invest $1.1 million in Lynchburg to open its first plant and create 20 jobs. The firm will begin operations in December and produce 40-50 tons of plastic film per month — boosting local manufacturing. WDBJ7
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lynchburg Water Resources will begin a six to eight week upgrade project on 11th Street Monday, December 1 that will replace aging water mains, fire hydrants, and sewer pipes between Court and Harrison while working with J.L. Crawford & Sons. Portions of 11th Street and Clay Street near the 11th and Clay intersection will be closed to through traffic and emergency vehicles during work—future closures at the Madison and Harrison intersections will be announced later. - ➤ The Department of Veterans Affairs housed nearly 52,000 homeless veterans in fiscal year 2025—a record high since 2019 and over 4,000 more than last year. The VA’s Getting Veterans Off the Street program, launched in May, helped over 25,000 unsheltered veterans secure emergency or permanent housing, including 113 at the Salem VA Health Care System. - ➤ The College Lake Dam Project in Lynchburg is complete after crews removed the dangerous dam damaged by a storm in August 2018, reconnecting two natural areas for the first time in nearly a century and restoring Blackwater Creek with new wetlands and trails—improving water quality and wildlife habitat.
