COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lynchburg Public Library is moving 35,000 books and programs as its main branch will close on Dec. 29 for renovations that will run through summer, with temporary services held at the Miller Center and Jones Memorial Library remaining open. Staff are also launching a bookmobile this summer to ensure all residents continue to access library resources—while the library reflects on 60 years of service.  Cardinal News
  • A Bedford orchard has thrived for generations due to a strong family legacy and dedicated care, and the owners work to preserve its heritage—ensuring the community benefits from its fresh produce.  WDBJ7
  • A list of Christmas parades in the ABC13 viewing area shows events from December 5 to December 7 in Altavista, Amherst, Bedford, Danville, Lexington, Lovingston, and Lynchburg — Lynchburg’s parade will run from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on December 7 with other cities offering themed events like Candy Cane Lane and Charlie Brown Christmas.  WSET
  • As freezing temperatures approach, communities are opening several warming centers and shelters to help people stay safe. The list includes a 24/7 shelter at the Rescue Mission of Roanoke, a warming bus by The Least of These Ministry on nights below 40 degrees, and a warming site at Lynchburg Salvation Army open when temperatures fall below freezing until March 31 — along with options in Franklin County, Martinsville, Henry County, and Galax.  WSLS 10

  • Holiday shopping in Star City was off to a good start as local retailers saw strong early sales on Dec. 1 — many expect a busy season ahead.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lynchburg City School Board holds a public hearing at 5 p.m. today at the administration building on Court Street to gather community input on fiscal year 2027 budget priorities—residents may call in with voicemails. The board will use these ideas to shape a budget proposal that Superintendent Kristy Somerville-Midgette will present on Jan. 20.  Cardinal News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Youngkin ordered flags to be flown at half-staff today on all state and local buildings and grounds—this order honors River North Correctional officer Jeremy Hall who was killed in November during an inmate attack. A memorial service will be held today to pay tribute to his service.  WSLS 10
  • Crews worked to fix a water main break at 10th and Commerce Streets in downtown Lynchburg Monday night. Lynchburg Water Resources said the break measured 10 inches (as reported by officials) and advised customers to run cold water for three to five minutes (do not use hot water) if discoloration persisted.  WSET

HEALTH NEWS

  • Winter is coming so local officials say neighbors should follow FEMA advice—store 96 hours of food, water, medicine, and supplies for pets—to be ready for power outages and icy roads. They warn drivers to equip their vehicles with shovels, blankets, and kitty litter and to know where the nearest warming centers are.  WSLS 10
