COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Healing Strides, a nonprofit in Boones Mill, is auctioning a signed Taylor Swift guitar to fund its horse therapy programs that support veterans, children and others. Bidding remains open for one more week.  WSET

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lynchburg City Schools celebrated 160 years of public education Tuesday afternoon at the School Administration Office — a plaque gifted by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War honors a milestone from 1865.  WSET
  • Students at Liberty Christian Academy wore purple Wednesday before winter break to honor Mark Spain (who passed away a year ago) as school leaders and students celebrated his lasting impact on the community.  WSET
  • Lynchburg City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kristy Somerville-Midgette is preparing a plan that adds a makeup school day on March 2 and builds a remote learning option if more winter weather disrupts classes; the school board unanimously approved the changes.  WSET
  • The Amherst County School Board delivered video remarks today praising the full accreditation earned by all division schools (a milestone that reflects strong review standards).  The News & Advance
  • The Lynchburg City School Board reviewed a new VDOE report on Tuesday night that rated schools as distinguished, on track, off track, or needing intensive support, with four schools flagged for intensive support. Board members discussed boosting parental involvement and vocational programs to improve student performance.  WSET

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • VDOT will lift temporary lane closures in most highway work zones from noon Wednesday, Dec. 24 until noon Friday, Dec. 26 and again from noon Wednesday, Dec. 31 until noon Friday, Jan. 2 (some semi-permanent work zones will remain) to ease holiday travel.  WSLS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials confirmed a measles case in Campbell County on Wednesday involving an out-of-state visitor who traveled through the Central and Southwest Regions. Exposure sites include two Rustburg locations on Monday, Dec. 8 (with risk of symptoms from Dec. 12 to Dec. 29); residents are advised to check vaccination status.  WSET
