- ➤ Lynchburg Police arrested five wanted individuals at a residence on the 500 block of Hillside Court Sunday, August 10 — all suspects surrendered without incident. WDBJ7
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Lucy Otey—a 60-year-old widow and mother of eight—founded the Ladies Relief Hospital in 1862 to care for wounded Confederate soldiers after a harsh comment from a doctor, and she boarded a boat to Richmond to ask Confederate President Jefferson Davis for permission. Her hospital lowered death rates in Lynchburg and set a new standard for wartime care that continues to be remembered at Old City Cemetery. The News & Advance

- ➤ A back-to-school event in Lynchburg hosted by Dr. James Camm — executive director of One Community, One Voice — gave over 300 backpacks, school supplies, and shoes to local children and families.
